About Brigantine
At a glance. Brigantine is an Atlantic County island city of 7,716 people (2020 census) covering about 10.9 square miles, with the ZIP code 08203. It was incorporated in 1890 and is named for brigantine ships wrecked offshore.
Schools. Brigantine Public Schools teaches pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. High school students attend Atlantic City High School.
Getting around. The only road onto the island is Route 87, Brigantine Boulevard, over the bridge from Atlantic City. The first bridge, built in 1924, was destroyed by the 1944 hurricane; the current bridge opened in 1972.
Places to know. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center, founded in 1978, has rescued more than 3,900 whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles. The 1926 Brigantine Lighthouse is a city symbol, and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge protects nearby marshes.
Selling a home. Brigantine requires a certificate of land use compliance before any sale or transfer of a building, confirming the use is allowed where it is. The Construction Official inspects within five working days of the application. New Jersey also requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
