About Margate
At a glance. Margate City is an Atlantic County beach town of 5,317 people (2020 census) on Absecon Island, between Ventnor City and Longport, with the ZIP code 08402. It began in 1885 as the borough of South Atlantic City and took the name Margate City in 1909, after Margate in Kent, England.
Schools. Margate City Schools teaches kindergarten through eighth grade. High school students attend Atlantic City High School.
Getting around. County Routes 563 and 629 serve the city, and the Downbeach Express toll bridge crosses to the mainland. NJ Transit buses 504 and 505 run to Atlantic City.
Places to know. Lucy the Elephant, the 65-foot landmark built in 1881, is a National Historic Landmark that draws about 130,000 visitors a year. Marven Gardens, the neighborhood behind the Monopoly property, is here too.
Selling a home. Margate requires a certificate of occupancy before a home is sold or rented to a new occupant. The Construction Code Official inspects within 10 days of the application to confirm the home is fit to live in. New Jersey also requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
