About Pleasantville
At a glance. Pleasantville is an Atlantic County city of 20,629 people (2020 census), about five miles from downtown Atlantic City. City Hall is at 18 N. First Street.
History. The area grew up along Old Shore Road and was once known as Risleytown, Adamstown and Lakestown, after early settlers. The Shore Road School, the first in the area, started in 1800. Pleasantville was part of Egg Harbor Township until it became a borough in 1888. By local legend the name comes from a sign painted for the storekeeper Daniel Lake: "Lake's Store, Pleasantville, New Jersey."
Library. The Pleasantville Branch of the Atlantic County Library System is at 33 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Pleasantville construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
