About Absecon
At a glance. Absecon is an Atlantic County city of 9,137 people (2020 census) on Absecon Bay, a few minutes from Atlantic City. City offices are at 500 Mill Road.
History. Shore Road was built through the area in 1716, and by 1774 the community was known as the Village of Absecon. Dr. Jonathan Pitney, who arrived in 1820, promoted a health resort on the island across the bay and helped organize the railroad to it. The Camden and Atlantic Railroad reached Absecon in 1854. Absecon was incorporated as a town in 1872 and became a city in 1902. The Absecon Lighthouse is in Atlantic City, not in Absecon.
Schools. The Absecon Public School District teaches pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Parks. City parks include Heritage Park behind City Hall, Veteran's Park, the Dr. Jonathan Pitney Recreation Complex and the Faunce Landing Road boat ramp.
Library. The Absecon Branch of the Atlantic County Library System is at 305 New Jersey Avenue.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Absecon construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
