About Atlantic City
At a glance. Atlantic City is an Atlantic County resort city of 38,497 people (2020 census) on Absecon Island, with about 10.8 square miles of land. It was incorporated in 1854 and has a mayor-council government. Its ZIP codes run from 08401 to 08406.
Neighborhoods. Sections include Chelsea, Ducktown, Venice Park, the South Inlet and North Beach.
Schools and colleges. Atlantic City High School is the city's public high school, and Stockton University runs a campus in the city.
Getting around. The Atlantic City Expressway ends in the city, including a tunnel connector toward the Marina district and Brigantine, and NJ Transit's Atlantic City Rail Line ends here as well.
Places to know. The Boardwalk opened in 1870 and runs about five and a half miles. Steel Pier dates to 1898, construction of Absecon Lighthouse began in 1854, and Boardwalk Hall hosts major events.
Selling a home. Atlantic City requires an occupancy permit before a sold home gets a new occupant, and before each apartment or house gets a new tenant. The city's code official inspects under the property maintenance code. Hotels and motels are not covered. New Jersey also requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
