About Northfield
At a glance. Northfield is an Atlantic County city of 8,434 people (2020 census). City Hall is at 1600 Shore Road.
History. Shore Road, the first public road in Atlantic County, was laid out in 1716. Daniel Baker founded the settlement of Bakersville here. From about 1830 to 1880 local shipyards built two-masted schooners for the coastal trade. A narrow-gauge railroad from Pleasantville to Somers Point opened in 1880.
Places to know. Birch Grove Park, at 1675 Burton Avenue, has lakes stocked with fish and is home to the Northfield Museum and Casto House. Camping there ended with the 2019 season.
Schools. The city lists Northfield Community School and Mainland Regional High School.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Northfield construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
