About Lumberton
At a glance. Lumberton is a Burlington County township of 12,803 people (2020 census) on Rancocas Creek. The municipal complex is at 35 Municipal Drive.
History. Robert Dimsdale, an English physician, bought land here from William Penn in 1683. The place was once known as Lumbertown, for the pine trees that were cut and carried by boat and raft down Rancocas Creek to Philadelphia. Lumberton was incorporated in 1860 from parts of Medford, Southampton and Eastampton townships, and part of it was taken in 1924 to form Hainesport.
Places to know. The old town hall, built in 1896, is now the Ridgway A. Gaun Community Center and houses the Lumberton Historical Society and its museum.
Schools. Lumberton Township Schools teach kindergarten through eighth grade. The township lists Rancocas Valley Regional High School as the high school.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Lumberton Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
