About Pemberton
At a glance. Pemberton Township covers 64 square miles in Burlington County, beside the Pine Barrens. Its communities include Birmingham, Browns Mills, Magnolia, New Lisbon and Whitesbog.
History. The township became a legal entity on March 10, 1846. It grew as a mill town along the North Branch of Rancocas Creek, and in the 1800s people here also made charcoal, iron and glass. Residents began growing cranberries in the wet ground near the streams. In the early 1900s Elizabeth C. White of Whitesbog began field experiments that led to the area's first cultivation of wild berries. Fort Dix, built during World War I, lies within the township.
Library. The Pemberton Library, part of the Burlington County Library System, is at 16 Broadway Street in Browns Mills.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Pemberton Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
