About Bordentown
At a glance. Bordentown is a Burlington County town on the bluffs of the Delaware River. The City of Bordentown covers about one square mile. Bordentown Township, a separate town around it, has its offices at 1 Municipal Drive.
History. The Bordentown Historical Society says the city began in 1682 with a log cabin on the riverbank and the name Farnsworth Landing. Joseph Borden settled here in 1717 and the town took his name. By 1740 he had started a packet line from Philadelphia. British forces occupied the town three times in 1777 and 1778. In 1816 Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of Napoleon and exiled King of Spain and Naples, bought large tracts of land here and built a mansion. The John Bull steam locomotive, built in England, made its first run on the edge of town on September 15, 1831. The Pennsylvania Railroad put up a granite monument at the spot in 1891.
Places to know. The historical society's walking tour includes the Clara Barton Schoolhouse at 109 East Burlington Street, the Francis Hopkinson House at 101 Farnsworth Avenue, the Friends Meeting House at 302 Farnsworth Avenue, where worship began in 1740, and Old City Hall at 11 Crosswicks Street, built in 1888. Hopkinson signed the Declaration of Independence.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the city or township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
