About Gloucester City
At a glance. Gloucester City is a Camden County city of 11,484 people (2020 census) on the Delaware River.
History. The area has been known as Fort Nassau, Gloucester Town and Gloucester Point. It was the county seat until the courthouse burned in 1786 and the county moved its business to Woodbury. In the 1840s David S. Brown of Philadelphia built textile factories here and laid out the street grid, and a post office opened in 1845. The state chartered Gloucester City in 1868.
Library. The Gloucester City Library is at 50 N Railroad Avenue.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Gloucester City construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
