History. Merchantville became a borough on March 3, 1874, from parts of Delaware Township, now Cherry Hill, and the former Stockton Township. The name is credited either to a family named Merchant or to the borough's founders, who were merchants.
Getting around. County Route 537 is the main road through the borough; U.S. Route 130 passes about two blocks from the borough's west end. NJ Transit buses 404, 405 and 407 run to Camden, with connections to Philadelphia.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Merchantville borough construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
