About Camden
At a glance. Camden is a city of 71,791 people (2020 census) on the Delaware River, directly across from Philadelphia, and the county seat of Camden County. It was incorporated in 1828 and covers about 10.3 square miles. Its ZIP codes run from 08101 to 08105.
Schools and colleges. The Camden City School District runs the public schools, with high schools including Camden High School, Eastside High School, Creative Arts Academy and Brimm Medical Arts High School. Rutgers University–Camden, Rowan University at Camden, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and Camden County College all have campuses in the city.
Getting around. PATCO stops at City Hall and Broadway. The Walter Rand Transportation Center is the hub for NJ Transit buses and a River LINE light rail stop, and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge links Camden to Philadelphia.
Places to know. The waterfront has Adventure Aquarium, the Battleship New Jersey museum and the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion concert venue. The Walt Whitman House is a museum, and the Camden Children's Garden is on the waterfront too.
Selling a home. Camden requires a Certificate of Continued Occupancy when a building is sold. The seller applies, the inspection covers the visible parts of the building along with state fire safety checks, and any open building permits must be closed first. An application is good for six months. Rentals go through the city Housing Department instead. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
