About Egg Harbor City
At a glance. Egg Harbor City is an Atlantic County city of 4,396 people (2020 census). City offices are at 500 London Avenue.
History. A group of German investors from Philadelphia planned the city shortly before the Civil War, and it was incorporated in 1858. The name goes back to 1614, when the Dutch captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey explored this coast and called the countryside "Eyren Hafen," the harbor of eggs. The city's first elected mayor, Francis Bierwirth, left office to fight in the Civil War and was killed at Antietam in 1862.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Egg Harbor City construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
