About Burlington
At a glance. Burlington is a Burlington County city of 9,743 people (2020 census) on the Delaware River. City Hall is at 525 High Street.
History. About 1624, Belgian Walloons built an island trading post here that the city calls the first recorded European settlement in New Jersey. The Dutch, then Swedes and Finns, held the island until the English took it in 1664. Quakers fleeing oppression in England settled Burlington, and on March 3, 1677, the Proprietors authorized the formation of the town.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Burlington city construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
