About Roebling
At a glance. Roebling is a community in Florence Township, Burlington County, on the Delaware River. It was built as a company town by John A. Roebling's Sons Company.
History. The Roeblings made wire rope and decided to build a steel mill to make their own steel. On June 25, 1904, they bought a 115-acre peach and potato farm near the Kinkora railway station. The nearest experienced workers lived in Trenton, twelve miles north, so the company built a town to house them. Charles Roebling designed and laid out the town and is considered its founder. Florence Township says Charles and his brother Ferdinand spent $4,000,000 on the steel mill, the wire rope plant and the town, where 750 brick homes were built.
Places to know. The Roebling Museum is at 100 2nd Avenue, in the building that was once the gateway thousands of workers passed through each day on their way into the mill. It opened in 2010.
Library. The Florence Township Library is at 1350 Hornberger Avenue in Roebling. It is open Monday to Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM, Friday from 11 AM to 4 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, with no Saturday hours in July or August.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Florence Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
