About Westville
At a glance. Westville is a Gloucester County borough of 4,264 people (2020 census) on Big Timber Creek. Borough offices are at 165 Broadway.
History. The Dutch built Fort Nassau in this area in the 1620s, though historians still argue over the exact spot. Thomas West, whom the borough calls its traditional founder, built a tavern near the creek where the King's Highway crossed; it became known as the Buck Tavern. The Borough of Westville was incorporated in 1914 from parts of Deptford and West Deptford townships.
Places to know. Candor Hall, the home of the Quaker surveyor John Ladd, was built about 1690 and still stands on Lafayette Avenue. The Thomas West House, thought to date from about 1746, stands on River Drive at Sixth Street and is a county historic landmark.
