About Pitman
At a glance. Pitman is a Gloucester County borough of 8,780 people (2020 census). Borough hall is at 110 South Broadway.
History. Pitman began as a Methodist camp meeting. The first Pitman Grove Camp Meeting was held in August 1871, lot sales began in 1873, and by 1890 the Grove had more than 400 permanent homes. The borough was incorporated in 1905. Pitman Grove and its auditorium were added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1976 and the National Register in 1977.
Schools. The borough's public schools are an early education school for pre-kindergarten through first grade, an elementary school for second through sixth grade, and a junior/senior high school for seventh through twelfth grade. Pitman is a walking district and uses no buses to take students to school.
Places to know. The business district runs along Broadway. The Broadway Theatre was built in the early 1920s. The Grove is laid out around a central auditorium with twelve streets radiating from it. Ballard Park is in the borough.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Pitman borough building inspector's office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
