About Sewell
At a glance. Sewell is a Gloucester County community that grew up around a railroad station in Mantua Township. Its name is also a mailing address used well beyond the old village. Rowan College of South Jersey, for one, is at 1400 Tanyard Road in Deptford with a Sewell mailing address.
History. Mantua Township's historical commission says the area was once called Chewsville, and the stop here was called Barnsboro Station after the stagecoach line. The community around it was named Sewell City for General William Joyce Sewell, an officer of the railroad, who did not live here. The railroad came through partly to haul marl dug from local pits. The station was built between July 1 and October 9, 1888, and served riders for nearly 75 years. The first schoolhouse, Knight's Run School, opened in 1870. Sewell School was built in 1913.
Schools. Sewell School, part of the Mantua Township School District, teaches pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.
Places to know. The Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park and Museum of Rowan University opened on March 29, 2025, at 66 Million Mosasaur Way in Mantua. Rowan says a fossil dig is offered from May to October.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Mantua Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
