About Mantua
At a glance. Mantua is a Gloucester County township of 15,235 people (2020 census) covering about 15.9 square miles in the middle of the county.
History. The state created Mantua Township in 1853 from part of Greenwich Township. It is named for Mantua Creek. The township says the creek's name comes from "Manta," an Indian word for frog.
Schools. The Mantua Township School District runs Sewell School for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, Centre City School for first through third grade and J. Mason Tomlin School for fourth through sixth grade. Students in seventh through twelfth grade go to the Clearview Regional schools, which serve Mantua and Harrison townships.
Parks. The township lists Chestnut Branch Park, Ceres Park Wildlife Sanctuary, Trooper Eli McCarson Memorial Park and Tall Pines State Preserve.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Mantua Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
