About Deptford
At a glance. Deptford is a Gloucester County township of 31,977 people (2020 census) covering about 17.6 square miles, with the ZIP code 08096. It was incorporated in 1798 and has a seven-member township council under a council-manager government.
Neighborhoods. Communities within the township include Almonesson, Oak Valley, Westville Grove, Jericho and Good Intent.
Schools. Deptford Township Schools teaches students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, and Deptford Township High School is its high school.
Getting around. Routes 41, 42, 45, 47 and 55 cross the township, with short stretches of Interstate 295 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
Places to know. Deptford Mall is the township's main shopping destination. Tall Pines State Preserve protects about 111 acres, and the historic Clement Oak marks where North America's first manned balloon flight came down in 1793.
Selling a home. Deptford's building code requires homes being sold, and apartments getting new tenants, to meet its smoke detector rules before anyone moves in. New Jersey also requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
