History. The Wildwood Crest Historical Society says the Baker brothers, merchants from Vineland, founded Wildwood next door in 1895. Starting in 1904 Philip P. Baker directed the founding of Wildwood Crest. The first house was built in 1906. In 1907 an arch 30 feet high went up at Cresse and Pacific avenues. Wildwood Crest became a borough on April 6, 1910, and Philip Pontius Baker was elected its first mayor about a month later. The borough then had 103 residents, and 28 of them voted.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Wildwood Crest borough construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
