About Ocean City
At a glance. Ocean City is a Cape May County barrier-island city of 11,229 year-round residents (2020 census), with the ZIP code 08226. It began in 1879 as a Methodist retreat, became a city in 1897, and calls itself America's Greatest Family Resort.
Good to know. Ocean City has not allowed alcohol sales within city limits since its founding.
Schools. The Ocean City School District runs three schools. Ocean City High School also takes students from Longport, Sea Isle City, Upper Township and Corbin City.
Getting around. Four bridges connect the island: the Route 52 causeway to Somers Point, the 34th Street bridge to Marmora, the Ocean City-Longport bridge, and the Corson's Inlet bridge to Strathmere.
Places to know. The boardwalk runs about two and a half miles, with the Music Pier and Playland's Castaway Cove amusement park along it. Corson's Inlet State Park protects the island's undeveloped southern end.
Selling a home. Ocean City's Division of Fire Prevention certifies smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when a one- or two-family home or an individually owned condo is sold, and for rentals. Inspections are by appointment on weekdays. New Jersey also requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
