About Maurice River Township
At a glance. Maurice River is a Cumberland County township of 6,218 people (2020 census) covering 94.7 square miles. The municipal building is at 590 Main Street in Leesburg.
Neighborhoods. The township includes the villages of Delmont, Heislerville, Leesburg, Dorchester, Bricksboro, Port Elizabeth and Cumberland, and part of Milmay. Delmont was called Ewings Neck until 1891. Heislerville was known as Maurice River Neck until around 1860.
History. The township was incorporated on February 21, 1798. Swedes settled the lower Maurice River valley in the mid 1600s. By local tradition the river is named for a Dutch ship, the Prince Maurice, said to have sunk at Dorchester. Elizabeth Clark Bodly, a Quaker, founded Port Elizabeth and sold lots there in 1785. In 1789 Congress made it a port of delivery. Eagle Glass Works opened there in 1799. Eli Budd dammed the Manumuskin in 1810 to power Cumberland Iron Furnace, and Cumberland Pond is what remains. Joshua Brick laid out Bricksboro in 1807.
Ships and the river. Shipbuilding has always been the main trade in Dorchester. The oyster schooner A.J. Meerwald was built there in 1928 and became New Jersey's official tall ship in 1998. East Point Lighthouse was built in 1849 at the mouth of the river. In 1993 Congress named parts of the Maurice River and the Menantico, Manumuskin and Muskee as a national scenic and recreational river.
Places to know. The Port Elizabeth Library is in a building put up in 1810 as Dr. Benjamin Fisler's store. The municipal building in Leesburg was Oak Leaf Academy, a schoolhouse built in 1856 and used until June 1958. Salt hay was once cut on land that is now the Heislerville Wildlife Management Area.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Maurice River Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
