About Bridgeton
At a glance. Bridgeton is the county seat of Cumberland County, a city of 27,263 people (2020 census) on about 6.5 square miles, with the ZIP code 08302. It is named for its bridge over the tidal Cohansey River, became a city in 1865, and has a mayor-council government.
Schools. Bridgeton Public Schools serves the city, with Bridgeton High School for grades 9 through 12.
Places to know. Cohanzick Zoo is New Jersey's oldest zoo and is free to visit, and Bridgeton City Park covers about 1,500 acres with three lakes. The city's historic district includes more than 2,000 properties, the largest of any municipality in the state. The Cumberland County Library is also in Bridgeton.
Getting around. Route 49 and Route 77 are the main highways.
Selling a home. Bridgeton requires a certificate of property compliance from code enforcement to sell any home or building (vacant land is exempt). Request the inspection before the sale. If it's missed, the owner still has to get the certificate before living in the property or renting it out. New Jersey also requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
