About Commercial Township
At a glance. Commercial is a Cumberland County township of 4,669 people (2020 census). Township Hall is at 1768 Main Street in Port Norris.
History. Caesar Hoskins made his home at Mauricetown in 1714, and the village streets were laid out in 1814. Port Norris, first called Dallas' Ferry, had a thriving oyster industry by 1870, and Bivalve and Shellpile grew up beside it around the shucking houses.
Neighborhoods. Places in the township include Port Norris, Mauricetown, Haleyville and Buckshutem.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Commercial Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
