About Upper Pittsgrove
At a glance. Upper Pittsgrove is a Salem County township of 3,432 people (2020 census). The municipal building is at the Pole Tavern Circle, 431 Route 77.
Neighborhoods. Places in the township include Pole Tavern, Daretown and Monroeville.
Places to know. A cannon was returned to Pole Tavern in 1913, and the township's photo album shows the old Pole Tavern Inn and the Daretown train station.
History. The township was formed on March 10, 1846, from part of Pittsgrove Township. Elmer was set off from it in 1893. Pole Tavern Circle is named for a liberty pole that stood there during the Revolutionary War.
Schools. The Upper Pittsgrove School District teaches pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at Upper Pittsgrove School. High school students go to Woodstown High School.
Getting around. Route 77 runs through the middle of the township and U.S. Route 40, the Harding Highway, runs across it; the two meet at Pole Tavern Circle. NJ Transit bus 410 runs between Bridgeton and Philadelphia.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Upper Pittsgrove Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
