About Pilesgrove
At a glance. Pilesgrove is a Salem County township of 4,183 people (2020 census). Township offices are at 1180 Route 40 East.
History. One old record says the name comes from Thomas Pile, also spelled Pyle. Pilesgrove was one of the county's original divisions. Pittsgrove was set off from it in 1769.
Places to know. Cowtown Rodeo, in the township, is known as the only professional weekly rodeo in New Jersey. Its season usually runs from late May to late September.
Schools. The Woodstown-Pilesgrove Regional School District teaches pre-kindergarten through 12th grade for Pilesgrove and Woodstown, ending at Woodstown High School.
Getting around. U.S. Route 40 runs east to west and Route 45 runs south to north; the two meet in Woodstown. The New Jersey Turnpike crosses the township's northwest corner.
Neighborhoods. Auburn, in the northwest part of the township, is a census place. Smaller places include Sharptown, Union Grove, Yorktown and Point Airy.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Pilesgrove Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
