About Penns Grove
At a glance. Penns Grove is a Salem County borough of 4,837 people (2020 census). It covers about 0.9 square miles on the bank of the Delaware River, directly across from Wilmington, Delaware.
History. The borough was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 8, 1894. The borough says it was once an industrial hub where glass making and shipbuilding played large parts, along with fishing and farming.
Places to know. Borough Hall is at 1 State Street. The borough's master plan lists three parks: Barber Avenue Park, Memorial Park, which has a 9/11 memorial, and the Riverwalk along the Delaware. Students attend the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Penns Grove borough construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
