About Elmer
At a glance. Elmer is a Salem County borough of 1,347 people (2020 census), between Pittsgrove and Upper Pittsgrove townships.
History. The borough is named for either Dr. Ebenezer Elmer, who owned the land, or his son Judge Lucius Elmer. Its earliest name was Ticktown, and then Pittstown. Elmer was incorporated as a borough in 1893.
Schools. Elmer students attend the Pittsgrove Township School District from kindergarten through 12th grade. High school students go to A.P. Schalick High School.
Getting around. U.S. Route 40 is the main road through the borough.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Elmer borough construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
