History. The township is named for Thomas Carney. The area was first called West Fenwick and later Penn's Neck. Oldmans Township was set off from it in 1881, when it was still called Upper Penn's Neck.

Getting around. The Delaware Memorial Bridge connects the township to Delaware, and interchange 1 of the New Jersey Turnpike is in the township. Interstate 295 has exits 2 and 4 in the township, and U.S. Routes 40 and 130 pass through. NJ Transit bus 402 runs to Philadelphia, and bus 468 gives local service.
Neighborhoods. Most residents live in Carneys Point, a census place of 7,841 people in 2020. Smaller places include Biddles Landing, Helms Cove and Laytons Lake.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Carneys Point Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
