About Alloway
At a glance. Alloway is a Salem County township of 3,283 people (2020 census). Township offices are at 49 S. Greenwich Street.
History. The township is named for the Indian chief Alloway. The village was first called Thompson's Bridge and then Allowaystown, a name it kept until 1882.
Places to know. Alloway Lake covers 157 acres. It opened to the public in November 2009 after the dam and spillway were replaced. Public access is at 26 East Canal Street, with parking, picnic tables, a dock and a small boat ramp. Only boats without motors, or with electric trolling motors, are allowed, and fishing is catch and release only. The township also has a history museum.
Selling a home. New Jersey requires a certificate for working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a portable fire extinguisher before a one- or two-family home gets a new owner or tenant. Ask the Alloway Township construction office whether anything else is checked before a sale. Rules change, so check with the town before listing.
